Here are some of the things I have seen, would recommend, and love to talk about. My first choice is the Queen’s Gambit, a rollercoaster of emotions, challenges and wardrobe. After a quick google search and to my disappointment but not surprise, I discovered it was written and directed by white men, and suddenly my mind wandered to the missing pieces, the polished edges that I yearned so much for. The show, although fantastic as evidenced by my recommendation, fell short. The relationship between Beth and Jolene was my favorite part of the story, but it was an interesting lesson that she becomes a radical and then shortafter intends on marrying a rich white man saying “fuck them if they can’t take a joke.” Jolene seemed to be our historical marker, in the beginning she experienced racism, but at the end she is above that and even now being catered to by a white guy. It creates a sort of strange full-circle of surface level acknowledgement of “history” while saying nothing about what was really going on. There is an understanding of discrimination and oppression brought up in the first episode and not referenced until the last. Beth had her own white-feminist issues to worry about, but that also, by the finale seemed to become all-but irrelevant. The nerdy men doubted her but there was nothing they could do to stop her as long as she had money to enter tournaments. The oppression faced by Beth and Jolene is profoundly different. Beth is welcomed into the chess world while Jolene is objectified in her Law office. I suppose what I am most upset by is one of the final scenes with Beth and Jolene in Jolene’s gorgeous new car (given by the white Lawyer courting her). Jolene goes on about how she wants to change the world and she can’t do that as a paralegal. Beth sits quietly with a knowing smile on her face with no intention of helping. She will continue to be a Chess champion and that is fine because she is a white woman and feels no responsibility toward the movement. I’m starting to feel neo-liberal ranting now and I want to make clear that the show was amazing, I just think they should have left the issue out, or fully integrated it so it did not feel so out of place to suddenly acknowledge the Civil Rights Movement. I hate the feeling that Netflix executives and producers are watching the news and public opinion polls and following closely along to decide what to include or exclude. Rich people insulated from the real events of the world just using our struggle for attention and acclaim. I want art that is Organic and True, not with pandering scenes to cover the ass of White Male Production. My father (James alia Happy) eldest sibling. We called her Aunt Sis. Because of the Great Depression my grandmother had to “farm out” most of her 8 children, because she could not feed them. So my Aunt Sis moved away from Lake Charles, LA to live with Great Aunt Colette and her husband UNC Prof George Lane on Franklin St. THE IMPACT OF THIS STORY ON MY FUTURE FAMILY. In high school (1980-1984, St Louis High, Lake Charles, LA) I dreamed of going to UNC, Chapel Hill. I requested the UNC materials at the counselor’s office. Ms. Robert’s, our counselor ordered the 1983 UNC admissions packet and I wondered at the fall colors and campus of rolling hills. Never applied (until I did for grad school years later). My children are both graduates of UNC, Chapel Hill. Our Durham home sits on New Hope Creek, the high taxed, little crowded town of Chapel Hill is on the other side. I am proud to have raised our children in the city of Durham, home of HBCU, NCCU. And not far from the fairytale safe, well-fed existence of my Aunt Sis and Great Aunt Colette. I wanted to name my daughter Colette, but my husband preferred MARIE! And so it goes, lol. SisterScene’s Young Co-Founders Marie and Brianna are both UNC scholarship students. And Emily Cox and Meleata Pinto, their mom’s are both alumnae. As a mother of two 20-somethings, in a 30-year marriage with a physician/researcher/teacher Tim McMahon, Emily continues to search for ways to spread her determined, sense of hope for bringing others into her explorer-experimentalist mindset. Since elementary school, Emily found ways to shift alienating situations with the kind of questions or ideas that created change. Asking the teacher for two ropes for long-jump or the red ball for kickball and tromping the big field for recruits re-routed the separationist-habits that left so many kids with nothing to do at recess. Through her work and educational path Emily has relentlessly been a disruptor and community-builder–starting a pep squad in middle school, shaking up the segregated social scenes in high school and college (including the Greek system), fighting ageism, homophobia and sexism in the French Consulate, Cultural Services and Embassy (in New Orleans and Washington, DC). Emily found new friends in UNC’s school of social work and more supportive teachers who led to her experiences in community mental health. As a licensed clinical social worker, Emily advocates for more radically accessible and inclusive systems where bureaucracy and insurance companies promoted the very inequities (racial, gender, economic) that her mission seeks to relieve. Emily has never given up on a dogged commitment to community advocacy. Emily and her daughter Marie, UNC Class of 2022, are co-founders of SisterScene, a supportive community for creative justice led by LGBTQ+ multiracial women and allies to deepen personal-creative connections for increased, shared engagement in social, civic, arts and social justice events and to demonstrate the benefit of outwardly committed cross-cultural, antiracist relationships. She has law degrees from Duke and Calcutta University and moved to the US from India, her native country nearly 25 years ago. She has been a very active member of the community having founded, KIRAN, a domestic violence organization for South Asians in NC and has served on the Boards of various health care and non-profit organizations. She is also a practicing Buddhist and has been active with various inter-faith groups. She has a passion for travel, food, film, reading and social change.
