Loveable Troublemakers: The Durrells in Corfu.
SisterScene lunch break at home: I decompress, eat healthy, and invite friends via social media to watch and discuss a show "The Durrells in Corfu," a PBS, Masterpiece Theatre series that started playing in 2016 and is on it's fifth season. It is a British COMEDY filmed on the Greek Island of Corfu--lots of culture, family development, gender typing to discuss--and beautifully acted, filmed, written and the scenery is wondrous.
Durrells in Corfu is a theatrical romp (from the novel by Gerry Durrell) about a 1930s middle class/proper-yet-curious-and a bit counter-culture British family-landing while they're financially 'down on their luck.’. The boundary-busting (culture/gender/cast/science/romance) is addressed with multiple perspectives thanks to the cast of well-painted characters. Muddy, silly, lots and lots of animals and confrontational discussions and mishaps. But the crazy white privilege-abuse, gender norm challenges, whacky-widow parenting, is a great mess to experience.
The Prince Charles actor from The Crown co-leads in an openly supportive and brazenly contentious and loving mother-son relationship focus that I especially appreciate. The FOOD, the ANIMALS, the SCIENCE vs. ignorance, the strong female characters, the ROMANCE storylines range from ridiculous to delicious, including dips and dives into facism, racism, exploring sex and gender norms in a baudy, 1930s comedic way. I recommend this show for ages 10 and up (and for parents comfortable with addressing sexual content with children, ages 6 and up, not to watch alone, to watch together). I need to think more and check on developmental critiques resources such as "Common Sense Media," before I firm up those age recs. #sisterscene #PBS #AmazonPrimeSeries #MulticulturalTVRec
My healthy lunch: Crunchy Celery dipped in peanut butter, Cauliflower, Red bell pepper dipped in ranch from Perkins Orchard of Durham, NC with NC Shrimp, mushrooms and cheddar or corn tortillas with ranch drizzle. Coffee. AND CORFU!! And a #sistersceneinvite to you to engage in the joy of sharing a show for discussion and sharing your own review to be a #culturecritique with us Sister Scene Creative Justice Community.
