President Biden on Thursday signed into law a bill creating a federal holiday to commemorate Juneteenth, the day marking the end of slavery in Texas. Because June 19 falls on a Saturday this year, most federal employees will get this Friday off.

Great nations don’t ignore the most painful moments. They don’t ignore those moments in the past. They embrace them,” Biden said in remarks in the East Room before a crowd that included lawmakers and 94-year-old Opal Lee, who campaigned to make the day a national holiday. The president, who spoke of efforts in some states to restrict voting rights, said the date doesn’t just celebrate the past but is a call for action.

SisterScene Hometeam Response by Ann Zimmerman:

OMG. My new hero is Opal Lee, the grandmother of the movement to get Juneteenth recognized as a national holiday. Chris Cuomo is talking to her right now on CNN, and he asked her if today was how she imagined it, and she thought for a moment. Then she said, "Well, I guess it was like I thought. But I'm gonna use a phrase the kids use - IT WAS OFF THE CHAIN!"

She is 94 years young, and her voice is strong, and her spirit is strong. I wanna be just like her when I grow up! —Ann Zimmerman, Winston Salem NC

karen holliman’s fire poem

It all begins with an idea.

TO Emily Cox ODE TO FIRE

My little forest is calling to me each day when I wake

My Abbey girl needs to run and play, a habit I will not break

My forest is quite a magical place, it fills my spirit, my soul

I’m strong today because I walk, this is how my Abs and I roll

It’s a place so naturalized

Time for me to get civilized

Thoughts in the woods can go anywhere, back to this sassy red headed girl

If you have time to walk in the woods, I suggest you give it a whirl

If I am tired or having some pain, I find a fallen tree

I stretch out and balance and watch the sky and thank God for caller ID,(silly me)

Yes, the simple things are important and I think of unsimple things too

But more often than not, I think what’s important and I have a real breakthrough

Abbey gets more time to play when I’m not feeling so well

When I say “Abbey Come” She runs to me, just like a bat out of hell

We walk home our spirits souring, I say “Hey Abs good walk”

She smiles at me, she knows the words, Yes, to my dog and myself I talk

I take her towel and wipe her off, even when she’s not wet

It’s our ritual, a loving moment, with me and the loveliest pet

My little woods are a magical place, it’s pure tranquility

It has the “it factor”, It has what I call miraculous overwhelmability

It all begins with an idea.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
